In case this is true, check out https://www.biocommons.org.au/events where you can register for a free, easy afternoon of an introduction to phylogenetic estimation, guided by me and with the expert help of Dr Bennet McComish. The venue is in the Maths and Physics building and it will run from 1-4pm. This workshop is the first of two planned; the second will be a follow-up where you bring your own problematic data for discussion or help. It will be run nationally via videoconfering technology, thanks to the amazing people at the Australian Biocommons, which used to be EMBL-ABR. Let me know if you're interested, and go register! The recruited engineers will be allocated for part of their time to Research Units and/or Technology Platforms. Tasks and responsibilities: The main mission is to provide support to Research Units and Platforms for the bioinformatics and/or biostatistics analysis of their data. Hi there, Tracey and I supervise a student, Waleed, who is looking at zinc uptake and translocation in barley. He would like to do some association mapping of Zn in barley as part of his PhD. Waleed's done some association mapping and blasting before, but Tracey and I are not experts in this area. Is there anyone at UTAS who might be able to help him get started? World MS Day is the perfect time for us to take stock of the MS Flagship Program successes so far, and think about our next opportunities and future directions. The MS Flagship Program is a collaboration between UTAS researchers and MS consumer organisations working together to generate and translate knowledge on the causes, treatment and prevention of multiple sclerosis. Anya will outline the main approaches to using 'the machine’ to learn from data, unsupervised and supervised learning, including the advantages and limitations of ML algorithms in current use. She will show how to gain research insight from ML outputs using examples from the Compute Earth research group, and show how the strengths of both humans and computers may be used together for best results. Anya Reading came to UTAS in 2007. She leads the Compute Earth group which pioneers geophysical data collection in remote or challenging locations such as Antarctica and outback Australia. This adventuring spirit extends to exploring and extending the ways that we can use computers to learn from data, and also to initiatives such as Art-Science data visualisation. She is Professor of Geophysics, in Physics at UTAS Sandy Bay, with strong connections to Earth Sciences and IMAS. Matilda will give us a brief introduction to SVMs, and go on to describe some of their applications in her PhD. This includes pixel classification in image analysis, environmental and taxonomic identification from the processed images, and detection of ecological changes in the fossil record. Matilda Brown is a PhD student in Biological Sciences at the University of Tasmania. She is working with Greg Jordan, Tim Brodribb and Barbara Holland to find new ways of applying Machine Learning techniques to answer palaeoecological questions. Matilda has spent most of her adult life trying to get people excited about leaves - either as a bushwalking guide, demonstrator or academic. She is interested in making life easier for other biologists and investigating the ecological and evolutionary history of our flora. With the emergence of plug-and-play libraries (i.e. TensorFlow) they are more accessible than ever but remain to many a black box with a few dials and buttons for tuning. Through his masters research into the application of Machine Learning to rainfall estimation, Ben will share some practical tips on how to tune an ANN and offer suggestions on how to avoid some of the common pitfalls, such as overfitting and suboptimal minima. No idea what those mean? That's OK! Ben will give you a crash course and some ideas to help you tune your model. Ben Schroeter is a Support Scientist at the Bureau of Meteorology working on the next generation of city-scale Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models, and PhD candidate at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies working on Antarctic NWP. An invitation to attend and present at the upcoming “Microbiomes in Tasmania” workshop and mini-conference

First announcement: Microbiomes in Tasmania workshop: questions, collaboration and connection with industry Dates: Monday-Wednesday 29th-31st October Schedule: Mon-Tues is a mini-conference, Wed is a paper writing workshop, both days are approx. 9am-5pm Venue: TBC Cost: Free In Tasmania, microbial community analyses are being conducted through different organizations (e.g. UTas, CSIRO, AAD, TIA, private industry) and for different objectives, including understanding human, soil and agricultural health, food safety, biodiversity, evolution and biogeochemistry. However, to date there has been very little formal collaboration amongst these groups to facilitate discussion of research questions, techniques, and facilities to streamline research efforts and stimulate cross-disciplinary research, grants and publications. To initiate collaboration amongst these groups, we are holding a three-day event (Mon 29 Oct – Wed 31 Oct); two days of presentations on health and ecological microbiome research and applications, with a third day to outline a working paper for publication. We are inviting presentations from each major “microbiome” research group in Tasmania, as well as leading microbiome researchers from elsewhere in Australia. We have identified you as one of the prominent “microbiome” researchers in Tasmania and it would be fantastic if you could attend. The outcomes of the workshop will be to build a network and shared understanding of the microbiomes research being done in Tasmania. Fostering this collaboration could lead to more rapid advances and efficient research.
