In this project we aim to analyse some healthcare systems using a variety of mathematical models with a view to better understand them, and to provide meaningful results that will enable healthcare practitioners to be better informed when making decisions. In the role you will: * Undertake high-quality research of national and international standing in the field of modelling health care systems to meet project milestones of the Australian Research Council Linkage Grant LP140100152. * Prepare scientific papers, liaise with project partners and submit manuscripts for publication. * Contribute to the preparation of progress reports to agreed stakeholders, ensuring reporting obligations to grants are met and recommendations on future directions for the research are provided. * Prepare and deliver results at relevant national and international meetings. * Make an effective and sustained contribution to the University in achieving its strategic objectives and fulfilling its operational responsibilities You will be employed on a full time, fixed term basis for 18 months. Well there's a great opportunity to join with a live webinar / tutorial presented by Monica Munoz-Torres next week, from 11 to 2pm on Tuesday November 21. There’s no charge, and no pressure, but if you’d like to come along with me and learn then please let me know. I’ll be logging in either from my computer or from a video conferencing room depending on how many people are interested. Apologies for the short notice! It kind of slipped off my radar on account of an unexpected surfeit of the usual academic mayhem. With luck and dedication we’ll also run more sessions next year, and the session will be recorded. AGTA annual meeting Special Day Registration and Workshop attendance for locals

The Australasian Genomics Technologies Association Annual Meeting will be held in Hobart from October 29th to November 1st at the Hotel Grand Chancellor. We have assembled an array of International and Australian scientists to present and discuss genomic technologies and the biology that these technologies are uncovering. We have planned session around complex traits, population genetics, functional genomics, bioinformatics and computational biology, epigenetics and transcriptomics, comparative genomics, gene editing, medical genetics and much more! Registration for the meeting is still open and you can view the program and other meeting information here<http://agtaconference.org/>. We have two concurrent pre-conference workshops<http://agtaconference.org/pre-conference-workshops/> planned on Sunday 29th Oct: "Can genome editing fulfil its promise in the clinic and the field?" and "Technical solution to single cell problems". Both workshops include presentations from invited speakers and panel discussions in which you can participate to learn more about the utility of genome editing or the techniques available for single cell genomics. Locals are invited to attend a workshop without registering for the whole meeting. Tickets are priced at $40 each or $20 for students. Hello! If there’s anyone out there who hasn’t yet heard of phylogenetics, or didn’t know that the University of Tasmania is the home of the strongest group of researchers working on it in Australia, well… you need to get out more. In particular, you need to get out to phylogenetics conferences! Oh look – here’s one: This is a call to register to attend Phylomania 2017 - The 9th Annual conference of the UTAS Theoretical Phylogenetics group, to be held 6th-8th December in Hobart, Tasmania. This year it will be combined with the 2017 Australasian Evolution Society meeting<https://aesconference2017.wordpress.com/>, running from 4th to 6th December. Yes, there’s a deliberate day of overlap (including the combined conference dinner). Phylomania (and the AES meeting) will be held within the School of Physical Sciences at the Sandy Bay campus of the University of Tasmania. The meeting will bring together mathematicians and biologists to discuss current research in phylogenetics and related areas. If your presentation is likely to also suit the AES audience then you can indicate that you’d like it to be considered for that combined day, when you register. There’s also a place there for you to enter an abstract: if you do, use normal text, html, or LaTeX. If you only have a (rough!) title just now that’s fine, you can update us with more information closer to the conference. You can bring a talk, or a poster, or both! These world-class repositories provide base-line data against which modern observations can be compared making them essential for taxonomic, genetic, agricultural and ecological research, and conservation and resource management. Starting in 2018, this PhD project will use CSIRO’s collection resources in combination with DNA barcodes, Whole Genome Shotgun sequences and 600 recently sequenced transcriptomes to build the tree of life for selected Australian insect groups, exploring genomes for functional genes within this evolutionary context. Specifically, I am having difficulties to import g:profiler output data into Cytoscape. Genome Annotation and Open Science workshop update

Dear all, The tour website has been set up and I’m now working on a registration page for this fun workshop. Book in those dates: 29th and 30th of June, Sandy Bay campus. And in related news, the open science workshop is now expanded to a whole day – there’s lots of interesting activities and discussions to take part in and I hope you’ll join us. Genome Annotation and Open Science workshop: Final Dates June 29 & 30.

Dear all, We are a GO* on the Genome Annotation and Open Science workshop, to be run by Dr Monica Munoz-Torres. We have had to change the date though: the workshops will now be on the 29th and 30th of June at UTAS on the Sandy Bay campus. The Genome Annotation workshop is a one-day affair and will be on the Thursday. I will send around details as to what you should do / prepare for (and I believe it’s quite minimal) when I have them. The Open Science workshop takes half a day and will be on the Friday morning. Dr Munoz-Torres will also be around that afternoon for more discussion. Please confirm now that you’re able to come – the more people who sign up, the cheaper it will be (and it will I expect be <$100). The very low cost is a direct consequence of the fantastic organisational skills of EMBL-ABR staff (some are cc’d above), who have enabled this roadshow-like tour to happen across Australia. Dr Munoz-Torres is visiting Melbourne, Hobart, Townsville, Sydney, Brisbane and Perth before returning to Prague. Let’s make her stay in Hobart the best one :) Here’s what I sent around last time, for a bit of a reminder: Bioinformatics users and researchers in Tasmania have a great opportunity to welcome an expert in genome annotation and bio-curation in the form of Dr Monica (Moni) Munoz-Torres from the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. There will be a 'lecture' component and a hands-on component. The hands-on part will be conducting manual curation exercises using Apollo. Attendees must bring their own computer, and it must be able to wirelessly connect to the internet, must have an up-to-date version of a web browser (please advise them to use Chrome, Firefox, or Safari), and must be able to open PDF files. No additional software installations are necessary. Some people find using Apollo with the aid of a mouse much easier than with a trackpad, so please advise potential participants to bring a mouse if they think it would suit them better. Also note: we have a computer lab booked: the machines do indeed connect to the internet. Is there a maximum or recommended number of participants? I prefer to teach groups of max. 25 people. I have also taught classes for up to 40 people without teaching assistants (TAs) - it can become a bit of a 3-ring circus at times, but it is doable. How long does it take to run this workshop? Should we say 9am-5pm? This usually includes 5 hours of teaching material + practical exercises. It is correct to assume we can reserve time slots of 9AM to 5PM, factor in breaks and meals - and likely we should be done by or shortly before 5PM. “Open Science” workshop What would be the structure, format and duration of such a workshop? Going by my conversations with Vicky, we thought the "Open Science" portion would be a combination of talks and a discussion panel - to make a case for open science, opening the conversation to more than one 'speaker' will also be a great start. As far as duration, I don't see this as taking an entire day, but rather a morning session or afternoon session. It depends on how much more structure you wish to give it... we can evolve the concept into something larger, of course. There will be a registration page set up soon: stay tuned, and mark the dates!
